Dưới sức ép quá lớn mà Infinity Ward để lại, Activision công bố Call of Duty: World at War trong mối hoài nghi sâu sắc phía cộng đồng game thủ, nhất là khi phiên bản này được nhào nặn dưới bàn tay Treyarch (từng sản xuất Call of Duty 3 trên Xbox 360/PS3 năm 2006). Người viết dưới cương vị một game thủ từng kinh qua mọi phiên bản trên PC của dòng sản phẩm này cũng không khỏi kém tin tưởng vào studio kém tên tuổi tới từ Hoa Kì, nhưng tất cả đã bị xóa nhòa chỉ sau vài phút trải nghiệm trong World at War.

Cốt truyện của Call of Duty: World at War quay lại với thời kì Đệ nhị thế chiến và mang trong mình nét mới lạ khi khai thác chiến trường viễn đông, game thủ sẽ vào vai chàng binh nhì Miller cùng với quân đội Đồng Minh tả xung hữu đột với phát xít Nhật trong những ngày tháng hấp hối của phe Trục, nhất là khi Đức Quốc Xã không còn "thoi thóp" được bao lâu nữa. Thực chất bối cảnh Đông Á chỉ mới đối với series Call of Duty nói riêng, vì trước đó rất lâu người viết đã từng bắt gặp quân đội Nhật Hoàng trong Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault và Hidden and Dangerous 2 (2004).

Bên cạnh chiến trường viễn đông, game cũng không quên "khai thác lại" những ngày tháng hào hùng của "Đoàn quân Đỏ" khi đưa người chơi vào vai chiến sĩ Hồng quân Dimitri Petrenko với sứ mệnh cắm lá cờ búa liềm đại diện cho nước Nga vĩ đại trên nóc nhà Quốc hội Đức.

Giao diện của World at War từ logo cho tới menu lựa chọn vẫn giữ nguyên phong cách quen thuộc từng xuất hiện trong các phiên bản trước. Chỉ có một đổi mới khá thú vị, đó là các đoạn phim cắt cảnh xen lẫn phim tài liệu và những đoạn clip diễn tả cốt truyện theo phong cách graffiti. Có vẻ như phong cách mĩ thuật của giới trẻ hiện đại đang là đích ngắm của nhiều nhà sản xuất game năm 2008, vì người viết cũng bắt gặp nó trong một tựa game quen thuộc khác là … PES 2009.

Không có nhiều thay đổi trong lối chơi mà Treyarch gửi gắm vào phiên bản lần này, nhưng đối với đa phần người hâm mộ, việc giữ nguyên gameplay như những người tiền nhiệm trước của Infinity Ward mới chính là điều mang lại thành công cho Call of Duty 5. Theo đó, nhịp game ban đầu khá chậm chạp, nhưng càng ngày càng nhanh dần. Game thủ càng chơi càng không thể "rảnh tay" tới một giây, vì hệ thống nhiệm vụ được liên kết tuyến tính và tràn ngập hơi thở dồn dập của chiến tranh. "Chậm hay là chết" - câu nói ấy đã trở thành kim chỉ nam đối với mọi phiên bản Call of Duty từ trước tớ
